How to buy a bunk bed

Bunk beds come in many different shapes and sizes these days. When most people think of a bunk bed, they think of the traditional wood twin over twin bunk bed. While that style is still very popular these days, there are many different types of bunk beds available. The first thing that you need to decide when purchasing a bunk bed is the size that you would like. This will depend partly on how much space you have and how much sleeping surface you would like to have on each bed.

The standard bunk bed is normally a twin size bed over a twin size bed. Both the top and bottom bunks will use a standard twin sheet set and comforter. Twin over twin bunk beds are the most common and are available in a greater range of styles, finishes and materials than the other size. They come constructed in both wood and metal. Another type of twin over twin bunk bed is a type of bunk bed called a loft bunk bed. Loft beds are essentially twin over twin bunk beds with built in features such as desks, shelves and drawers. Some even contain closets or tuck away beds. Loft beds are normally constructed of wood and are built extra very strong to support the extra features.

One problem that many people used to have with bunk beds is that they were not large enough. They were afraid that their child would outgrow a bunk bed or their guests would not fit on the bed. Three types of bunk beds offer a new solution to those old problems. The first is the twin over full bunk bed. They feature a twin size bed on the top and a full size bed on the bottom. They are available in all colors and materials. Futon bunk beds are a twist on the twin over full bunk bed. Futon bunk beds feature a twin size bunk bed on top and a futon on the bottom. They are almost like having an extra couch in the room and are a great way to maximize your space. The final bunk bed style is a little harder to find. It is a full over full bunk bed. They allow you to keep two full size beds in one space. Full over full bunk beds are truly a great way to squeeze a lot of bed in a small place.

THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU BUY A BUNK BED

Step 1

Think about the future before setting foot in the store. Consider your child's age right now and how many years of use she's likely to get out of a bunk bed. Often, children grow much faster than you anticipate, and whether it's because the bed seems too childish, or the child grows too large, you may be back at the store before you know it to buy a new, more mature bed.

Step2

Look at all the options. Before you buy the standard bunk bed set, take your child with you and shop for all the choices available. Depending on his age, you can probably find sets that are fashioned after castles or car garages or that have desks built in. Be creative and go with a theme.

Step3

Check the bed for guardrails. Some bunk bed manufacturers construct bunk beds with a guardrail on one side only, assuming that the other side will be pushed against the wall. Even if this is the case, that's still a safety hazard. The bunk bed set you buy should have guardrails on all four sides.

Step4

Mind the gaps between the guardrails. Once you've done some shopping and have a few models in mind, check the product information or measure for yourself that the distance between the bed frame of the upper bunk and the lowest guardrail doesn't exceed three and a half inches.

Step5

Measure the distance from mattress to guardrail. In order to prevent falls from happening, the upper bunk should be made with guardrails that expand a minimum of five inches over the surface of the mattress.

Step6

Inspect the ladder. A bunk bed set should include a ladder so that the child doesn't have to rely on the end of the bed to climb to the top bunk. Be certain that the ladder secures to the top bunk portion of the bed frame and won't dislodge when a child climbs up or down.

Step7

Select the right size mattress. The mattress that you buy should be top quality and leave no more than one inch around each side from its edge to the bed frame.
